READER’S GUIDE
Birth of Wind by Stephen Francis Montagna is a female samurai historical fantasy (Wind Trilogy, Book 1). In a world that denied her a place, she became a legend.
Birth of Wind is the first novel of the Wind Trilogy, a historical fantasy that begins in Japan in 1333. Its heroine, the samurai called Wind, is placed in the middle of one of the most male-dominated eras in history. Her determination, skill and disciplined fighting carry her to the end, and at her death the shogun places a curse on her sword that binds the warrior and the blade together for eternity.
That curse is the thread of the whole trilogy. The editorial review published with the novel, by Dan Holloway for Pacific Book Review, notes that it opens with a prologue in the creation myth of Izanagi and Izanami before moving into recorded history. The book portfolio names its themes as defiance against tradition, identity and self-worth, honor beyond recognition, sacrifice, strength through adversity, and war and its consequences.
