THE STORY
What happens when a suspected weapons-of-mass-destruction program reaches the point where diplomacy may no longer be enough?
Walker is partnered closely with Sergeant Dorothy Ramirez, another highly trained member of the elite force. Their relationship extends beyond military cooperation; they share the dangers, pressures, losses, and emotional burdens that come with repeatedly being sent into situations where returning home is never guaranteed.
Their unit is stationed in Port Said, Egypt, positioned close enough to Libya to become the launching point for a dangerous operation.
But before the mission can begin, the soldiers must prepare themselves for an entirely different kind of battlefield.
This is not simply a conventional military assault.
The troops must understand chemical and biological hazards, operate in an unforgiving desert environment, gather intelligence, work with international personnel, and penetrate an area where the consequences of exposure to the weapons being developed could be fatal.
The manuscript follows the soldiers through preparation, training, personnel changes, relationships, disagreements, military politics, intelligence gathering, and the growing pressure surrounding the Libyan operation.
THE INCITING CRISIS
The novel opens in New York City in November 1998.
President Albert Cole arrives aboard the USS Intrepid, following a terrorist attack at the Trump International Hotel and Tower in Manhattan in which Vice President Mary Hirshfield was taken hostage. The President discovers that Lieutenant Robert Walker and Sergeant Dorothy Ramirez were instrumental in securing the Vice President's release.
The opening establishes Walker and Ramirez not merely as soldiers, but as members of an elite force trusted with missions ordinary military units cannot undertake.
The New York crisis also provides the bridge to the larger international story.
Walker wants to return to his unit rather than participate in political ceremonies in Washington. His conversation with President Cole reveals the mindset of a soldier who considers himself most useful when he is with his fellow troops and preparing for the next mission. The manuscript subsequently connects Walker's unit to the developing operation involving Libya.
THE
SPECIAL OPERATIONS UNIT
One of the distinctive elements of BIO-LEVEL THREE is its attention to the soldiers who make up Walker's unit.
They are not presented simply as anonymous commandos.
The manuscript spends considerable time establishing their personalities, military backgrounds, specialties, relationships, conflicts, and individual histories.
Among the important members and associated characters are:
LIEUTENANT ROBERT WALKER
SERGEANT DOROTHY RAMIREZ
COLONEL BRUCE LEADBETTER
GENERAL JOHN WHITE
PRESIDENT ALBERT COLE
DOCTOR KRUSE
THE NEW RECRUITS
THE LIBYAN THREAT
Ayn Sidi Muhammad
and
Abu Na'im
BIO LEVEL THREE
The title of the novel refers directly to the nature of the mission.
Earlier Special Operations missions involving Walker's unit have dealt with other forms of weapons and military threats.
Bio Level Three is different.
The soldiers are preparing to confront both biological and chemical weapons.
The manuscript explicitly identifies this as the reason for the mission's name and describes the operation as involving the two suspected Libyan chemical-processing facilities.
The soldiers therefore require specialized preparation.
Their training includes chemical and biological protection, detection equipment, emergency procedures, protective masks, casualty treatment, and operations in contaminated environments.
The military planners understand that ordinary battlefield tactics may not be enough.
THE INTERNATIONAL DIMENSION
the diplomatic battlefield
and
the physical battlefield.
THE HUMAN SIDE OF THE SOLDIERS
The soldiers are fighting to complete the mission, but they are also fighting to hold their unit together.
PREPARING FOR THE MISSION
THE DESERT MISSION
THE CLIMAX
intelligence
special operations
chemical and biological warfare concerns
international cooperation
desert warfare
political decision-making
military preparation
and the survival of the soldiers.
CENTRAL CONFLICT
At its core, BIO-LEVEL THREE explores the conflict between preventive action and catastrophic risk.
The central question is not simply whether the soldiers can reach the target.
It is whether the international community can prevent a chemical or biological weapons program from becoming an even greater threat without creating an even larger catastrophe.
The novel repeatedly places its characters in situations where there are no simple choices.
President Cole must make decisions with international consequences.
General White must translate political decisions into military action.
Colonel Leadbetter must prepare soldiers for an operation whose hazards extend beyond conventional combat.
Walker must lead his people into danger while knowing that every decision can affect their survival.
And the soldiers themselves must accept that preparation can reduce risk, but never eliminate it.

SHORT PUBLISHER'S SYNOPSIS
BIO-LEVEL THREE follows Lieutenant Robert Walker and Sergeant Dorothy Ramirez, members of an elite Special Operations unit preparing for one of their most dangerous assignments.
After intelligence identifies two suspected chemical and biological weapons facilities deep inside Libya, the United States faces an escalating international crisis. Diplomatic negotiations and proposed inspections create uncertainty, while military planners prepare for the possibility that the facilities must be neutralized before they become operational.
Stationed in Port Said, Egypt, Walker's unit undergoes specialized training and prepares for a mission unlike their previous operations. Chemical and biological hazards, desert terrain, international intelligence, and the possibility of enemy resistance all become part of the planning.
As political leaders debate the appropriate response, Walker concentrates on his soldiers. He knows that every mission carries a price, and previous operations have already taken members of the unit.
Eventually, diplomacy gives way to action.
Walker and his team enter the Libyan desert, guided by intelligence and assisted by personnel familiar with the region. Their objective is to reach the suspected facilities and complete their mission before the threat becomes a reality.
What follows is a high-stakes military operation in which the success of the mission depends not only on firepower, but on preparation, intelligence, teamwork, timing, and the ability of the soldiers to survive long enough to get home.
