READER’S GUIDE

A Castro assassination, a civilian uprising and a secret kept since 1962

The Paradise of the Devil by Stephen Francis Montagna is a cuba political thriller. A coup in Cuba. A buried secret. A nation on the brink.

The Paradise of the Devil is a political and military thriller set in Cuba. Colonel Carlos Rafael Hernandez Alvarez, an officer fed up with the condition of the Cuban military, confronts Fidel Castro, kills him and takes command of the island. He is sure the Cuban people will back him. He has misjudged them: a civilian army organizes and attacks his troops, and the revolution he meant to finish becomes a new one aimed at him.

Under the uprising sits the secret Castro kept after the Cuban Missile Crisis, and what that secret makes the United States do is where the novel turns from a coup story into a confrontation between nations. The book portfolio sums up the arc in two lines: “He killed Castro to save Cuba. Now Cuba wants him dead.” It is one of seven books on the New Release shelf, beside the Miami seaport attack of The Vulture Will Lead You to Death.
